BIDDEFORD, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball fell to Southern Maine, 3-1 (25-21, 12-25, 25-22, 25-21) on Friday night inside of the Harold Alfond Forum on the campus of University of New England.
The Mariners fall to 0-1, while the Huskies improve to 1-0.
The first set proved to be evenly matched, but the Huskies took four-straight points to claim the 25-21 victory. The Mariners used a six-point run to open up a 9-5 lead in the second set and claimed the 25-12 win. USM fought back from a 15-10 deficit in the third set, orchestrating an eight-point run to take a narrow 25-22 win. With the fourth set tied at 21-21, the Huskies scored four points in a row to claim the match.
Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Mariners with 11 kills, eight digs, an assist, an ace and a block, while Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) led the team with 14 digs, and contributed nine kills, four assists and three aces. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied a game-high 30 assists, to go along with nine kills, seven digs, three aces and a block and Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) chipped in with 13 digs, two aces and an assist.
Kacey Foerster led the Huskies with 15 kills, 10 digs, three aces and a block, Lauren Delissio tallied a game-high 17 digs, and chipped in with four assists and an ace and Sophie Lindsay led USM with 22 assist, and added six digs, five kills, three blocks and an ace.
Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, August 31 when they face both Saint Joseph's College of Maine and UNE, beginning at 2:00 pm.
