KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball kicked off the 10th Annual Maritime Classic with a pair of non-conference victories on Saturday inside of Liebertz Gymnasium. In the battle of the Mariners, Maine Maritime prevailed over Merchant Marine 3-1 and followed that up with a 3-0 win over SUNY Maritime.
With the victory, Maine Maritime improves to 6-1 overall and will return to action tomorrow, when they wrap up competition at the Maritime Classic with a 10:00 am match against Massachusetts Maritime at Liebertz Gymnasium.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 – United States Merchant Marine Academy 1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20)
Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass.) led Maine Maritime with 22 kills, nine digs, three aces and an assist, while Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) contributed 11 kills, three digs and a pair of aces and Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the team with 15 digs and chipped in with six assists, an ace and a kill. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led Maine Maritime with a match-high 40 assists, while also adding seven digs, six aces and five kills.
Paige Smith led Merchant Marine with 13 kills, nine digs, two aces and two blocks and teammate Skyler Burnham added a match-high 16 digs to go along with an ace and an assist. Kyleigh Kappas tallied 30 assists, six digs, three blocks, two kills and an ace.
Maine Maritime 3 – SUNY Maritime 0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-15)
Melampy led the Mariners with 10 kills, three digs, two aces, two assists, and a block, Perez tallied a match-best 12 digs, to go along with four aces and Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) had a match-high 17 assists to go with seven aces, two kills and two digs.
Erika Kirchner led SUNY with nine assist and two digs, Rylee Malone led the Privateers with seven digs, and teammate Celnya Custodio tallied a team-leading three kills.
