KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated Massachusetts Maritime 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-12) on Sunday morning in the 10th Annual Maritime Classic hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy, to claim the Maritime Classic title for the fourth-straight year.
With the win the Mariners improve to 7-1 overall, while the Buccaneers drop to 1-5. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday night, when they host Husson University for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 pm.
Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass.) led the Mariners with 12 kills and added three digs, three aces, two assists and a block to earn Tournament MVP honors, Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) recorded eight kills, hitting .615, four blocks, one dig and one ace to land a spot on the All-Tournament Team and Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) led the Mariners with 31 assists while contributing four kills, four digs, two blocks and an ace to also earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with seven digs and five aces, and added six assists.
Madison Morrill led the Buccaneers with five kills, Bianca Andronic led the team with six digs and Michelle Sheehan led Mass. Maritime with nine assists.
