CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated Husson University, 3-0 (25-12, 25-8, 25-20) on Wednesday night in non-conference action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
With the win the Mariners improve to 8-1 overall, while the Eagles drop to 3-10 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action next Tuesday, September 24 when they host Bates College at 7:00 pm.
The Mariners jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and never looked back, taking the set 25-12. Maine Maritime dominated the second set, sailing to a 25-8 victory and despite a late-match effort by the Eagles, secured the straight-set win with a 25-20 victory in the final set.
Reigning North Atlantic Conference Player of the Week, Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass.) led the Mariners with a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs, and also added three aces and a block, while both Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) and Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) tallied nine kills. Cacacie added four aces, three digs and two blocks and D'Auria contributed seven digs, and an assist. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) recorded 11 digs, to go along with an assist and Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied a match-high 31 assists to go with five digs, three kills and two blocks.
Adrienne Beatty led the Eagles with 10 digs, Hanna Hembrow chipped in with six assists, two kills and two digs and both Cat Torres and Cheyenne Young added five digs.
