CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy's Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) has been named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, while Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) has been named the NAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week.
The 2018 NAC Volleyball Player of the Year, Adams, picked up right where she left off last season, helping lead the Mariners to a 2-1 week against a trio of tough non-conference opponents. Adams tallied 30 assists, nine kills, seven digs, three aces and a block in the hard fought 3-1 loss to Southern Maine on Friday in the season-opener. The setter followed that up with 28 assists, seven kills, four digs and a block in the 3-0 win over St. Joseph's College of Maine and saved the best for last this week, tallying an impressive 45 assists (the second best of any MMA player in program history a four-set match), nine digs, four kills, three aces and three blocks in the Mariners' 3-1 win against University of New England. With those numbers, Adams became Maine Maritime Academy's all-time assist leader, breaking the record in just her third game of her senior season. Overall, Adams averaged 9.6 assists per set, 1.81 kills per set and 1.81 digs per set.
The three-time North Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Perez continued her defensive prowess in the first three matches of the 2019 season, the senior libero helped lead the Mariners to a 2-1 week, with victories against St. Joe's and UNE, averaging 4.27 digs per set. Perez tallied 13 digs, two aces and an assist in the first game of the season, a 3-1 loss to Southern Maine on Friday. She followed that up with a pair of impressive performances on Saturday to guide the Mariners to the Saturday sweep, tallying nine digs, and three assists in the 3-0 win against the Monks, and 25 digs, five assists and an ace in the 3-1 win over the Nor'easters.
