Gillian O'Neal joins the sidelines as an Assistant Coach for Maine Maritime Volleyball program after an outstanding four-year career in the Mariners uniform.
The 2013 NAC Rookie of the Year claimed the 2015 and 2016 NAC Player of the Year accolades and was a NAC All-Conference selection all four seasons. She helped lead the Mariners to the 2016 NAC Championship Title and to an NCAA Tournament berth. She was selected to participate in the 2016 NEWVA Senior All-Star Classic and was also named the 2015 Maine Maritime Academy Female Athlete of the Year.
In 2016, the team captain broke the Maine Maritime Career Record for kills (1,445) and set a new single-season record for kills (409), while recording 17 double-doubles on her way to being named the NAC Tournament MVP. O'Neal ranks among the best in numerous single-match, season, and career statistical categories in MMA Volleyball program records.
O'Neal graduated a semester early with Magna cum laude honors in Marine Biology, was named to the Dean's List, and earned the Dean's and Distinguished Scholar Scholarships. She was named the 2016 NAC Women's Volleyball Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year, as the 2016-17 Maine Maritime Academy Female Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year and to the NAC All-Academic team. She coordinated community service projects with the "Volleykids" program, with Special Olympics and served as the President and Secretary of the MMA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
O'Neal was also a 2016-17 nominee for the NAC and NCAA Woman of the Year awards.
